Here is one of the pictures from my painted journal, Secret History. I should explain that I am less a fine artist than I am an illustrator; my work in general tends to inhabit a no-man’s-land between the world of words and the world of images. When I write, I record pictures in words; when I paint, I tell stories in colors and symbols. So–here’s a painted story, but before I tell you mine, I’m interested to hear yours. What do you see in this picture? (If you need to see details, you can double-click for a larger image.) Talk amongst yourselves….

Beautiful picture! I love it!
Okay, I see the distant past, represented by the crowd of medieval musicians, and the less distant past, represented by the dancing Georgian couple. They appear to be doing the Penguin Dance which I do when I’m happy–raise one flipper-foot and put it down, raise your other flipper-foot and put it down.
Then down below are children, children. Where did they come from? How did they get there? One is lonely and sad, one is happy with a book, one is quietly observant, one is actively observant with an older child protecting him/her from losing contact with safety, one is alone and nearly fell, but is climbing back to security. And the anatomically correct angel, showing them all how to fly.
It’s a picture of a living soul. Makes me happy!
How fun–I like your reading of the picture.
